And down the rabbit hole we go....
Welcome to the Tea party, grab a cup and one of those little tiny sandwiches because I am about to spill the tea on all things OT.
Hi, my name is Krissy Mather and I am a first-year Master of Occupational Therapy Student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
I'll share all of the ins and outs of my time as an Occupational Therapy student and hopefully provide some insight to people thinking about pursuing this as a career. Hopefully, I'll get your questions answered and put your minds at ease as you explore this career.
My background...
My journey to Occupational Therapy was not a straightforward one, in fact, I had never heard of Occupational Therapy until I had graduated with my bachelor's and was working in education.
I graduated from Ohio State with a degree in Public Health, but after began working in education as a contracted science teacher. I traveled from school to school teaching a variety of classes with all types of students. Through these schools, I met my first Occupational therapist and WOW did their job look fun.
What I love the most about Occupational Therapy is that it can be anything. As an occupational therapist, your job is to help people, and not just people in a general sense... but actual individuals.
Each person you help will have their own goals, needs, challenges, and abilities. Your job is to get to know them well enough to so you can help them meet their goals in a way that works for them.
This is not a one size fits all profession.....
It requires you to appreciate and understand the beauty and uniqueness of your client, and create solutions centered around them. It will require creativity, patience, empathy, and LOTS of knowledge (but we'll get there).
If this kind of challenge is what you're looking for in a future career, then come on down the rabbit hole into the vast world of Occupational Therapy.
I will serve as that rabbit with the cool clock necklace, guiding you along the way as we explore the complex career of occupational therapy.
